. . . And we're off and running ! Here are a couple of drawings from our new international student Asahi Miznguchi . We asked Asahi if he could draw and it appears that he can . And then some !
Our current Year 10 are exploring processes and techniques via portraiture . And they are doing some delicious work (so good you could eat it ! Not that you'd want to. That would be silly) !
Our Year 10 kete are looking at Survival as a theme this term . They have been focusing on Survival (literally) in the school pool . They have focused on survival in the Science room (what the human body needs to survive) and in the Art Room, they have focused on surviving social media ! We investigated the pros and cons of it and produced art work that is both celebratory and cautionary . We looked at the work of NZ artist Sam Mathers because he's great ! We use artist models a bit like training wheels when you are learning to ride a bike . At some point you won't need them but it's a great way to get going . To complete the metaphor, picture the teacher as the concerned parent running alongside !
The Year 12's are getting to grips with 'Identity'. They are free to interpret the theme however they jolly well like . So they have !
Currently, we have all the Year 10's doing an 8 Week Crash Course on skill building . Not at the same time , it must be said . During this time, we focus on drawing , printing and painting skills . We also look at the work of an established artist , try to learn something from this and then incorporate this learning into our own paintings . It's pretty intensive . . .
The latest Year 10 Kete is looking at something which has had an affect on our community . The title of the project is TWO TRUTHS AND A LIE . We have looked at propaganda and bias in the media in relation to war. The students looked at posters and art work from previous points in history that have either tried to convince us to go / not to go to war. Then they produced a painting which incorporated bias to support their viewpoint on the issue . Are some things worth fighting for or is it always a bad idea to fight ?
Our Year 11's are beginning to hand in their internal assessments and, blimey, it's been worth the wait, don't you think . . . .
This week we fondly farewell Hannah, our lovely international student from Koeln (pronounced as in Eau de Cologne as in the stuff you put on your skin to smell good) in Germany. She hadn't done much painting before coming here but she really wanted to give it a go. This is her work (in chronological order). It's great to see her development and this has been down to her determination and desire. A big kiwi 'Chur Bro, SWeet As' to you, Hannah and good luck trying to work out what that actually means on the long flight home.
Our Year 9 students have been making some wonderful pieces based on Tapa designs (with a modern twist). If you'r going past the Art Room, check the mural out.
Wow ! ! !
We have 2 new international students, Minori and Haruka . And what splendid artists they are . . . .
We don't usually advocate students painting on themselves but when it's this good, it's hard to argue about it ! Step forward, Rosie Thompson . . .
It's the last Year 10 Kete of the year and we have been asking the big questions ! Where do we come from ? Who are we ? Where are we going ? And to do this , we have been using the medium of collage (mostly . Some students just want to paint !)
