Year 9 are up and running with an exercise in creative mark making . They had a lot of fun !
Here's an exercise in making an image from a secondary source look like an original piece . " But that's cheating " I hear you say . Yes and no . One thing is for certain is that although a lot of starting points are the same, the destination is sometimes markedly different .
The Year 1 1 's were given the task of producing a Self Portrait (not necessarily in the traditional sense) for homework . . .
Our lovely Year 9 tamariki have created Zentangles as an exercise in control using Indian Ink and whittled sticks . It takes patience and skill ( as you can see ) .
The Year 9 kete class have been working on their mixed media skills . They took an image that represented their whakapapa or their roots , if you
will , and explored image making with a variety of wet and dry materials . Good these Year 9 's aren't they !

Rather like it takes a plane a bit of effort to get airborne , our talented senior students after taxiing on the runway , are starting to take off . Exciting things are starting to happen . . .
The Year 9 Kete for Term one have been working with Drama to do some work that relates to their pepeha . After all, a picture paints a 1000 words . Their starting point was looking at the woodcuts of NZ artist Nigel Brown . Then they found images of their river / mountain / place / people and came up with a design that incorporated all these things .
The Year 9 students have been working on exploring a mixed media approach to mark making . They researched 'Signs and Symbols' and it quickly became apparent how much these things dominate our lives . They're everywhere ! ! !
Great mahi taiohi . . .

Xavier has recently joined us and he is a prolific artist . Here's an example of his drawing . Be prepared to see a lot more . . .
And here's some work from Harmony who works exclusively from her emotions . . .
Here's a little side trip . Our Year 9 's have been looking at drawing and have been challenged to think beyond the idea that a good drawing has to look as accurate as possible in order to be successful . We talked about how drawing should have life and spirit . And this is what they have done so far . Eventually , our aim is to make one big piece of art work that shows our school from many different perspectives and viewpoints . Watch this space . . .
And back to the Seniors . . . Kia kaha you lot !
The Year 9 / 10 HiP class have been looking at maps . They were asked to find a map which shows a place of special significance to them . Try this . . . . Take a map and reimagine it . What do the marks represent ? What might the colours mean ? Imagine making a journey through the mind from one side to the other. This is what they did . . . . . .
The wonder of Kowhaiwhai . The Year 9's have been looking at this beautiful artform and designing their own kowhaiwhai designs . Then they used a mixed media approach to realise them . . .
The seniors have completed their boards ( see the '2021 Art / Photography / Visual Art and Design boards' page) . Here's a close up look at some of the individual pieces . Wow !
Here we are showcasing the work of our wonderful year 9 student , Tupaea . He's made a series of posters that will help you to improve your Maori language skills whilst enjoying his art work simultaneously !
9GRN and 9GMK have been looking at the types of patterns which occur across different cultures . They chose two and looked to combine aspects of each one in order to create something original . . .
Last short project for the juniors of the year . Wellington has a huge array of Street Art ( paintings based largely on imagination ) . This is our attempt at being imaginative with pencil and paint . Imagine them 50 feet high and 100 feet across filling a large wall somewhere . . .
